My use of vintage tissue paper dress patterns is an integral part of my practice and personal history; and these delicate, evocative quasi-industrial materials can be found in all of the pieces that comprise this new series, “Emerging Fear of Flowers.” This body of work was created during more than two years of relative isolation during the COVID19 pandemic. During this time, my husband brought me a weekly bouquet of flowers from the open air marketplace where he shops for food. As my anxiety blossomed, my art making changed and became more abstract and colorful to ward off my dark feelings. Each work is embedded with a hint of humor - and the number 19 - as an homage to coping mechanisms, even as familiar sources of comfort counterintuitively transform into a strange beauty that is tinged with the edge of the unknown.
